Entrevista con AEOLIAN / Interview with AEOLIAN

In English:

Recently I had the opportunity to chat with Raúl Morán Zafra, leader of the the Melodeath Spanish band AEOLIAN, and very interesting things came up:

Hi guys, thanks for attending this interview for El Lado Oscuro - Metal Crítica.

1. I would like to start with the origin of Aeolian. What does Aeolian mean? Who make up the band, where they come from musically speaking, what are their influences and ... Mallorca !! It does not seem like there are many bands there, how does that happen?

Hello Alfonso, first we want to thank you for the support received from your blog.

Aeolian comes from the Greek god of the wind "Aeolus". We liked it because of its relationship with one of the forces of nature. In addition, Aeolian is also a musical scale quite used in our songs also called natural minor scale.

The relationship between the components of the band comes from far. For example, Dani (singer) and I have known each other for 25 years. It was precisely our interest in heavy music that united us. Until 2 or 3 years ago we were playing together in a Viking Metal band called Battlehorn. Alberto (drums) has played in quite a few bands. In one of them, called Desmodus, he coincided with Dani and Toni. He also currently plays in a Black Metal band called Inferitvm with which they released their third album this January through the label Inverse Records. Toni (bassist) has also played in several local bands, especially Brutal Death Metal as Descomposed Torso. He also played in Helevorn, a Doom Metal band that also released a new album this January through the Solitude Productions label. Finally, Gabi (guitar) is a guitarist and composer in an instrumental surf music band called Hattori Hanzo Surf Experience in which I play the trombone. That's where the rocker wink of Aeolian may come from, especially in the solos.

Influences, many. But it would be very difficult for me to name one in particular. I think that what comes out when composing is a mixture of all the music we've heard over the last 20 years. Our intention is to compose the music that we would like to listen to. I could name you some bands like Opeth, Amorphis, Dissection or Kreator, but I would leave many more unnamed.

The thing with Mallorca is curious. There are a lot of bands of all styles, including Metal. What happens is that it is very difficult to get to be known and even more to travel out and play outside the island. If you live in Madrid you take a van and you will play wherever you want. Here we always depend of a plane or boat ship. Even so there are several Metal bands that have managed to travel. I could name you Helevorn, Trallery, Eveth or Toxic Army.

2. Your first album "Silent Witness", tell me about it. What motivated you to do it, how long did it take to record it and especially, where did the environmental inspiration come from and who composed the themes?

The truth is that I did not start composing the songs thinking about making a record. It was also unclear whether I would be able to assemble a band. All this started as a personal project and the truth is that I have to thank all those who have helped me carry to it out, especially the band members.

As there was no rush, the recording lasted more or less half a year. It must be said that during the recording process the other musicians joined the band.

I took care of the composition of the songs. Also, there was no one else in the band when I did it. The environmental theme is something I had clear from the beginning. It is something that I am increasingly aware of and I think we should all do the same.

3. How has the reception of the audience been with "Silent Witness? Have you played outside the Balearic Islands? Have you been put on the radio?

The truth is that thanks to the diffusion that the record company has done to us, we have reached enough media from all over the world, something unthinkable when I started with the project. And I have to say that it was a pleasant surprise to see that most of them liked our proposal. To the date we have not been able to go outside the islands, but we are working on it. As I mentioned before, it is not an easy task, especially at the beginning. As far as I know we have been put on several radios from different countries.

4. As it has been the norm in the musical world for almost thirty years, living from the sale of records has become impossible for the bands, that had to be attenuated with concert revenues, shirt sales, unconventional advertising, etc. How are you doing, how did Aeolian fund and finance itself, who supports you, do you have a record label, PR people?

At the moment we are financing ourselves with the money from the sale of CDs and T-shirts.

We do not have PR or concert agency, manager, etc. although we do not rule out the possibility of doing so. At the moment we have the support of our label Snow Wave Records, which is very important since it has helped us with the whole process of the release of the album and continues to do so with other issues.

5. Going back to "Silent Witness", in my experience, such a disc -of this level of quality, I mean- is the product of the alignment of several factors, individual quality, personal experiences of the members, commitment and musical integrity. What can you tell me about it?

When I started this project I did not know where it would go to, but I knew how to do it. So in the composition process I tried to make all the parts of the songs equally intense and to transmit something to me when listening to them. It is clear that this was possible thanks to my musical experiences during my life, in addition to those of my bandmates. For each band you pass, each band you discover, each experience of your life makes you mature. Another very important part when assembling the band was the election of the members. As you very well say, the commitment and musical integrity is very important, so it was taken into account when forming the band.

6. What about the future of Aeolian? In the short and medium term what will you do, seek for internationalization, play at festivals in Europe?

In the short and medium term we have already begun to get in touch with festivals throughout Europe with the intention of starting to move the band internationally. Let's see if we get it. On the other hand, we must continue working to make ourselves known with the tools we have. In addition, we have already begun to compose new songs, we already know that rushes are not good, so the more time we dedicate the better.

7. And America, when will we see you from this side of the pond?

I wish I could give you an answer to this question. Although we have been playing in other bands for many years, this is a new band that still needs to be known.

8. Finally, do you have plans to record again, do you already have material or are you currently enjoying the 'sweet smell of success'?

As I mentioned before, we have already started composing new material. The idea, if nothing changes, would be to edit the second work during 2020.

I reiterate my thanks for this conversation, I hope the achievements continue.

It has been a pleasure to chat with you. We would like to remind you that due to the theme of the band, we decided to donate 10% of the profit from “Silent Witness” sales to The Ocean Cleanup. Here you can see all their activities www.theoceancleanup.com. If someone is interested in buying the CD, you can do so at www.snow-wave-records.com or at aeolianband.bandcamp.com.
