Entrevista / Interview Sister - Le Klub, Paris, 13 diciembre 2016

Sister: ¡Somos nosotros, jaja!

Sister: Que bien, jeje!. Gracias.

Definitivamente seguiremos creciendo y haciendo cosas nuevas.

ENGLISH

Interview with the Swedish band Sister, at the pub Le Klub, Paris, December 13, 2016.

ELOMC: Thank you for welcoming me. My name is Alfonso and I am the webmaster of a blog in Spanish, based in Venezuela, called El Lado Oscuro – Metal Critica and it is a pleasure for me to do this interview. This conversation will also be published in the sister page Rocktambulos.com originally Venezuelan, but now based in Argentina. Generally, my page does only comments of records, but from time to time, if I am on a trip and the opportunity presents, I do interviews to the bands that accept it, so again many thanks and it is a privilege for me to talk to you, bands that, because of the changes in the music industry, have been having more difficult times than it was a couple of decades ago.

Sister: It's a pleasure for us. We are Cari Crow (drums) and Tim Tweak (guitar). Effectively the situation for the bands now is very difficult, but we are working hard to get far. We believe in ourselves.

Guess who is not part of the band (the hair gives an indication :)

ELOMC: First of all, you are Sister, you are not so easy to locate on the Internet, the name is confused with the Californian band of Glam Metal. So that's my first question: Who is Sister?

Sister: Kerry (drummer) It's us, haha! Although I know that our name is often confused with the band of Nicky Sixx, the name comes for years ago and was only when in 2005 reviewing magazines like Metal Hammer and Kerrang that we found out that there was also that band with the same name and although we had changed our original name, from Ztikky Sister to Sister, we decided not to change. We stayed like this.

ELOMC: Almost two years ago I had the chance to interview this Australian band, Ne Obliviscaris, in a concert that like this, was in a very small venue in London, now they play for thousands. Are you aiming at that?

Sister: Absolutely, we are now promoting our latest record in Europe and have all the intentions to make ourselves a name and let the people have fun with our music.

The beautiful roadie, merch seller and bus driver for the band

ELOMC: I have argued that you are not Glam, you are not Punk, neither Sleaze, but you are a little bit of all that, with an extreme perspective. At the same time, you sound for moments like Bon Jovi in kabuki dresses, with the image of Belphegor and Cradle Of Filth. How do you see yourselves, how do you define Sister?

Sister: It's great to hear that, since we never wanted to define Sister as one genre. We try to mix genres, and expect that people who listen to us like what we do and to be a success. I really do not want to be type casted in a specific genre. We like to mix the music we love.

ELOMC: Interesting perspective. In fact, I confess that I have not heard your two previous albums, but this new work, "Stand Up, Forward, March!", I liked it a lot and the song ‘Carved in Stone’ I selected it as contender for Song of the Year of the blog. You have long been formed as a group, perhaps more than ten years, what took so long to record your first album?

Sister: That's great, hehe! Thank you. Our previous records took a lot of time to get out because we were very young at the beginning and we had to develop ourselves, to grow, it was a natural thing, at some point we decided to get serious about the band. Between each album there has been a growth, both from the instrumental point of view and in the compositions, we believe that we can continue to improve and that is what we try to demonstrate in our new work. The idea is to have fun with what we do.

ELOMC: In general I do not like comparisons beyond the obvious references of the elements taken from what the bands like to hear. But in your case I would say that there is more than a similarity with The Ramones, in the sense that although your music is not complex, but frontal and you have something to say. Does Sister really have anything to say? Are you the next Ramones?

Sister: (answers Cari - guitar) I've always said that I would rather be the next Joey Ramone than the next Yngwie Malmsteen, I'd rather be that cool guy who plays live music with good melodies and fun riffs than a complicated musician. I'm not saying I'm going to be or I'm the next Joey Ramone, but it's an honor that someone thinks or says something like that.

ELOMC: Do you see reinventing yourself on the next album or have you reached your comfort zone?

Sister: (answers Cari – guitar) I am always fear of being comfortable. We will definitely continue to grow and do new things. I do not want to and I refuse to repeat a record. That is my goal. We have been improving from disk to disk, "Stand Up, Forward, March!" is already the third and since I joined the band on the second album, replacing the previous guitarist, I have been constantly writing music, although I do not do the lyrics. We would like to say things and keep growing. We feel like pieces of a puzzle, putting parts together, it is impossible to say what will happen, but surely we will not repeat a disk again.

ELOMC: Will we see you giving concerts in Latin America?

Sister: Surely. We would like to go to all parts of the world, we want to listen all places, where the audience is, if they want to see us, we will do everything we can to get there. We were in the UK and Scandinavia this year and we would like to go to Japan where we have already published the album and hope they will accept us. We hope to see and travel around the world carrying our music. There is nowhere we do not want to go.

I closed this interview thanking the band again and heading for the concert they offered, and verified firsthand that Sister is a straightforward band, it is sincere and fun, their choirs are easy and their performance in Paris achieved a great integration with the people and so, the public paid them surrendering themselves. Their dark image really hides friendly musicians, although their leader, the singer Jamie, gave me the creeps, mixed with much charisma XD. I recommend visiting them on their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/sisterband and official http://www.sisterofficial.com/
