Los integrantes de la excelente banda italiana de Power Sinfónico, Winterage, fueron entrevistados para el blog.

ELOMC: Greetings, I am Alfonso and for the last four years, I have maintained a Venezuelan based Metal music blog in Spanish language, called El Lado Oscuro – Metal Critica, you are very kind accepting this interview.

1.- ELOMC: As I introduced me, let me know who you are, where do you come from and most important of all, where were you hiding this excellent record “The Harmonic Passage”?

Dario: → Hello Alfonso, thank you for this space! I'm Dario, the keyboardist and bagpiper in Winterage. We are six guys from Genova, a lovely port city in the north-west of Italy. We started playing Power Metal back in 2008, and we've always wanted to make it Symphonic so, when we finally set up the right line up, we immediately started to work on our album. Talking about the album: we weren't hiding it, we were making it! And it took so damn long... But now it's done, and we aren't going to hide it at all!

2.- ELOMC: It seems clear to me and probably for the rest of the audience that you have a clear influence in your sound from Rhapsody Of Fire, nonetheless your add much to that sound, making it different… influenced but not copied. Am I right? How you define your work and obtain your sound?

Dario: → I don't think anyone who is going to make Symphonic Power Metal will ever manage to completely avoid the Rhapsody influence; we didn't manage to, and we didn't want to: Rhapsody of Fire are a great pride in the metal scene of our country, their powerful and dreamy music has signed the path of our boyhood.

We owe them much, and we never want to hide it, but I think our songwriting, arrangements and production choices are in some ways different from those of Rhapsody, and the outcome was an album which, in my opinion, sounds pretty different from Rhapsody, for better or worse.

Our sound has several important ingredients which our listeners will learn to discern, but the main feature of our sound are our majestic orchestral arrangements, written by Gabriele to fit a real symphonic orchestra. I think this is what makes our sound different from most Power Metal acts.

3.- ELOMC: The metal scene welcomes every year a lot of new bands, some of which, like in your case, are excellent ones, but the fact is that only very few of them last long enough to create a perdurable memory, probably most basically because of the new paradigms that the internet has created, we liked or not. How are you facing that reality? What are you going to do or try to establish yourselves and make it last?

Dario: → Times have changed, albums are not sold anymore, attention is not durable... We know this well, as everybody who's attempting to play music does. Luckily we're having a nice response for our album, and a lot of people are willing to support us for what we've done. We have a little but strong group of real supporters who give sense to all we're doing, and we hope more people are about to join this small family. What could I say? We want to make more albums like this one, and better than this one. Who knows if that's enough to make it last?

4.- ELOMC: Talk to me about “The Harmonic Passage”, how long it took to see the light, who helped you, how it has been received, what is your message with this record, if any?

Dario: → I think the most important question among those you asked is who helped us. This work has only been possible due to the unselfish and unconditional help of tens of wonderful friends who participated in the work in any way possible.

We need to thank all of the musicians (more than 40) who played in our album, our director, technicians, designers, fans and managers for letting this happen.

This work took very long to see the light: we've written the songs over a very long time, and then we started the big work of arranging everything for the orchestra, then we had to record every single instrument, and there were many. We had a hard time mixing it all, and the mastering has been long work too (we need to really thank the great sound technician Tommy Talamanca for putting the pieces together). Now we're being rewarded with a lot of good reviews and, most of all, a lot of people cheering us for our work and our music.

The main theme of the album, although it is not a concept album, is the importance of fantasy and imagination and the role they play in the harshness of daily life.

5.- ELOMC: Are we going to see you playing live in Latin America in the near future?

Dario: → Well, I can't say it for sure, but we'd really like to. South America is a magical land, made of marvellous landscapes and fascinating countries and cultures. We're having a wonderful response by latin american fans, who seem to be very passionate about this kind of music, and very sincere in their feelings. We would love to play for such people.

6.- ELOMC: Is there anything else you would like to add? (Please let me know who your female voice companion is)

Dario: → First of all, our female voice companion is the gorgeous Silvia Traverso, who has been accompanying us for years as a precious addition to the band. She is actually a relative too, she is the aunt of Riccardo, our guitarist... who happens to be my cousin!!

A last message for all the fans of symphonic and power metal: listen to “The Harmonic Passage” someway, and I don't think you will be disappointed. Well, if you also buy it we won't be disappointed either!

ELOMC: Saludos, soy Alfonso y durante los últimos cuatro años, he mantenido un blog de música Metal basado en Venezuela, en idioma español, llamado El Lado Oscuro - Metal Crítica, son muy amables en aceptar esta entrevista.

1.- ELOMC: Ya que yo me presenté, díganme quienes son ustedes, ¿de dónde vienen y lo más importante de todo, ¿dónde estabas escondiendo este excelente disco "The Harmonic Passage"?

Dario: → Hola Alfonso, gracias por este espacio! Mi nombre es Darío, el teclista y gaitero en Winterage. Somos seis chicos de Génova, una ciudad portuaria encantadora en el noroeste de Italia. Empezamos a tocar Power Metal en 2008, y siempre hemos querido tocar Sinfónico así que cuando finalmente establecimos la alineación de la banda, de inmediato comenzó el trabajo en nuestro álbum. Hablando sobre el álbum: no lo escondimos, estábamos haciéndolo! Y tardó tanto maldito tiempo ... Pero ahora ya está hecho, y no lo vamos a esconder en absoluto!

2.- ELOMC: Parece claro para mí y probablemente para el resto de la audiencia que ustedes tienen una clara influencia en el sonido de Rhapsody Of Fire, no obstante añaden mucho a ese sonido, pero es diferente ... influenciados pero no copiado. ¿Estoy en lo cierto? ¿Cómo definirías su trabajo y obtienen su sonido?

Dario: → No creo que nadie que vaya a hacer Symphonic Power Metal jamás logre evitar totalmente la influencia de Rhapsody; no lo conseguimos y no lo queríamos: Rhapsody of Fire son un gran orgullo en la escena del Metal de nuestro país, su música es poderosa y soñadora y ha marcado el camino en nuestra infancia.

Les debemos mucho y nunca hemos querido ocultarlo, pero creo que nuestra escritura de las canciones, arreglos y opciones de producción son en parte diferentes a las de Rhapsody, y el resultado fue un álbum que, en mi opinión, suena bastante diferente de Rhapsody, para bien o para mal.

Nuestro sonido tiene varios ingredientes importantes que nuestros oyentes aprenderán a discernir, pero la característica principal de nuestro sonido son nuestros majestuosos arreglos orquestales, escritos por Gabriele para adaptarse a una orquesta sinfónica real. Creo que esto es lo que hace nuestro sonido diferente de la mayoría de los actos de Power Metal.

3.- ELOMC: La escena del Metal acoge cada año una gran cantidad de nuevas bandas, algunas de las cuales, como en su caso, son excelentes, pero el hecho es que sólo muy pocas de ellas duran el tiempo suficiente como para crear un recuerdo perdurable, probablemente básicamente por los nuevos paradigmas que Internet ha creado, nos guste o no. ¿Cómo afrontan esta realidad? ¿Qué van a hacer o tratar de hacer para confirmase a ustedes mismos y hacer que duren?

Dario: → Los tiempos han cambiado, discos no se venden más, la atención no es durable ... Lo sabemos bien, como todo el mundo que está tratando de hacer música sabe. Por suerte estamos teniendo una buena respuesta de nuestro álbum y mucha gente está dispuesta a apoyarnos en lo que hemos hecho. Tenemos un pequeño pero fuerte grupo de fanáticos que verdaderamente dan sentido a todo lo que estamos haciendo y esperamos que más personas estén a punto de unirse a esta pequeña familia. ¿Qué podría decir? Queremos hacer más álbumes como éste y mejores que éste. ¿Quién sabe si todo esto es suficiente para hacer que dure?

4.- ELOMC: Háblame de "The Harmonic Passage", ¿Cuánto tiempo se tardó en ver la luz, quien los ayudó, cómo ha sido recibido, cuál es su mensaje con este disco, si es el caso?

Dario: → Creo que la pregunta más importante es quien nos ayudó. Este trabajo sólo ha sido posible gracias a la ayuda desinteresada e incondicional de decenas de maravillosos amigos que participaron en el trabajo de todas las maneras posible. Tenemos que agradecer a todos los músicos (más de 40) que contribuyeron en nuestro álbum, nuestro director, técnicos, diseñadores, aficionados y directivos que permitieron que esto suceda.

Este trabajo tardó mucho tiempo en ver la luz: hemos escrito las canciones durante un tiempo muy largo y luego empezamos el gran trabajo de organizar todo para la orquesta, luego tuvimos que grabar cada instrumento y había muchos. Vivimos un tiempo difícil para mezclar todo y la masterización ha sido un trabajo largo también (tenemos que agradecer realmente el gran técnico de sonido Tommy Talamanca para juntar las piezas).

Ahora estamos siendo recompensados con un montón de buenas críticas y sobre todo, una gran cantidad de gente que nos animan para continuar con nuestro trabajo y nuestra música. El tema principal del álbum, aunque no es un álbum conceptual, es la importancia de la fantasía, de la imaginación y el papel que desempeñan en la dureza de la vida diaria.

5.- ELOMC: ¿Vamos a verlos tocar en vivo en América Latina en el futuro cercano?

Dario: → Bueno, no puedo decirlo con seguridad, pero realmente nos gustaría. América del Sur es una tierra mágica, hecha de paisajes maravillosos y fascinantes países y culturas. Estamos teniendo una respuesta maravillosa por los fans latinoamericanos, que parecen ser muy apasionados acerca de este tipo de música y muy sinceros en sus sentimientos. Nos encantaría tocar para esas personas.

6.- ELOMC: ¿Hay algo más que quieras agregar? (Por favor, díganme quién es su voz femenina)

Dario: → En primer lugar, nuestra voz femenina es la hermosa Silvia Traverso, quien nos ha estado acompañando durante años como una adición valiosa a la banda. Ella es en realidad también familia es la tía de Riccardo, nuestro guitarrista ... que resulta ser mi primo !!

Un último mensaje para todos los fans del Power y Symphonic Metal: escuchen "The Harmonic Passage" y no creo que los decepcionará. Bueno y si también lo compran no seremos nosotros los defraudados!
