1.-ELOMC: Greetings, I am Alfonso and for the last four years I have maintained a Venezuelan based Metal music blog in Spanish language, called El Lado Oscuro – Metal Critica, you are very kind accepting this interview.

Xen: No problem at all, happy to assist a blog contributing to the metal scene.

2.- ELOMC: Without much preamble, I –and some few other thousands- think that Ne Obliviscaris is probably one of the most innovating Metal acts in the recent years, “Portal Of I” and now “Citadel” have taken the world by storm… Why is that? What are you making different? What is the secret?

Xen: It’s nice to think that so many people are enjoying what we do, it’s still a little hard to fathom as to how high we’re being held in terms of innovation though. What people are probably finding is that each member in the band plays a role and influences the sound, we all listen to quite different music so our cauldron is brimming with rather varied ingredients…sometimes it can be hard to agree on direction but the secret is for everyone to have an open-mind and the willingness to compromise for the greater cause. We only release new material we’re ‘all’ content with.

3.- ELOMC: The band’s line up is almost the same since 2003, but it took you until 2007 to record your EP “The Aurora Veil” and almost ten year in total, until 2012, to come up with “Portal Of I”. Why it took so long? And, in that sense, how only after two years you were able to feed the public anxiety with “Citadel”, what happened?

Xen: We had a lot of ups and downs, going through almost a full line-up change in the space of our first 2 years (Tim [Charles] and I have been there from the start), and other things from health issues, to family deaths etc, so I wouldn’t say that it’s unusual but it seems we had so many obstacles thrown our way, we’ve been lucky to get out alive really…as with every band starting, you’re always going to have teething problems. ‘Portal of I’ was the result of all those years of pain and heartache, frustration, anger and joy, and I think people can sense that from absorbing the sound. Once we had released ‘Portal of I’ , we signed with Season of Mist for ‘Citadel’, we had stripped ourselves of the weight we were carrying and went straight into writing the new album with a cleaner slate…it’s amazing how easily things progress when life gives you a breather and you can concentrate of what you love doing.

4.- ELOMC: Within the Metal scene it is almost an obsession to define the style of the bands, probably one of the most entertaining but vacuous exercises. Just to maintain the mystic aura, how do you define yourself? And, do you see the Ne Obliviscaris evolving into something different in the near future or are you going to keep exploring the area of the music where you are now?

Xen: Yes, we get a lot of people trying to pigeonhole us; I think simply saying ‘extreme progressive metal’ may be the safest way to explain us without too much of an argument. We’re not black, we’re not death etc, we combine a lot of different elements from all genres. I see us evolving, as is generally the natural order of things but I think regardless of where it takes us, people will know that it is still NeO…I believe at this point we can say that we have not only a sound, but more so a feeling.

5.- ELOMC: I would like to make an statement and hear your reaction: Ne Obliviscaris means "Do not forget" in Latin, I am quite sure your work is creating precedent and I’ve stated that your are making history, like Black Sabbath or Celtic Frost, what do you think about that?

Xen: You’re very kind to say as much, I’m not sure we can be compared to the precedent that Black Sabbath or Celtic Frost have made…that’s very humbling. It’s an interesting statement, as we’ve had a few people comment on similar terms recently, but honestly I think with the amount of bands these days that are doing something different it’s harder to shine through and really set yourself at the forefront of musical vision…personally I think we have a long way to go until we even show up on that sort of radar.

6.- ELOMC: Are we going to see you in Latin America in the near future?

Xen: It seems we’ve a quite a few fans over there, so hopefully yes… we’re looking to travel to as many places as possible so it’s definitely something that will be on the cards.

7.- As a last question, “Citadel” is quite complex and at the same time a huge success, what is the meaning of this record, what is the message you are trying to send with it?

Xen: "Citadel" is used to represent the human form, this is an exploration beyond our protective walls and into the depths of who we are. What makes us tick, how do we deal with excessive emotion etc

8.- ELOMC: Is there anything else you would like to add?

Xen: Thank you for your time Alfonso, and for supporting the music scene. We look forward to touring Latin America, so whichever fans reads this, please let us know you exist.
